Our Mission & Purpose

Responsible Technology Championing Digital Sobriety

49,455
photos taken worldwide every single second
93 million
selfies taken every single day on Android alone
8 kg CO₂
emitted yearly by storing 1,825 photos in the cloud

As a certified purpose-driven company, Meerabel has embedded its primary mission into its corporate bylaws: to raise awareness about the environmental impact of digital technologies and provide concrete tools to reduce it.

We place our technology at the service of everyone, convinced of the transformative positive impact it can have when adopted by an engaged community.

Digital pollution now accounts for nearly 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions—exceeding commercial aviation. Every photo kept indefinitely without genuine purpose occupies servers refrigerated 24/7 and triggers continuous background cloud syncs.

The Three Core Challenges of Mobile Photography

1

Photo Hyper-Proliferation

Between duplicates, bursts, screenshots, and visual notes, photography is no longer just memory preservation. Its value has shifted from emotional significance to momentary convenience.

2

The Hidden Carbon Footprint

Every high-resolution shot captured produces an escalating environmental footprint, especially when replicated across redundant remote datacenters.

3

Exponential Growth

Over 1.9 trillion photos are captured globally each year, representing an environmental burden of millions of tons of CO₂ equivalent.

Methodology & Scientific Sources

How We Calculated the Carbon Impact of a Smartphone Photo

Because no isolated study addressed the lifecycle of a single smartphone photo, we cross-referenced official ADEME benchmarks with research from Négaoctet.

ADEME estimates that a 1 MB email with attachment generates approximately 19 g CO₂e through network transmission and server storage. For an average 4 MB cloud-synced photo, this equates to roughly 4.68 g CO₂ per photo per year.

Across 1,825 photos taken annually per person, this totals more than 8.5 kg CO₂ yearly per user—the equivalent of traveling 2,900 km on a high-speed electric train!

1. Email Reference
1 MB email ≈ 1.17 g CO₂ (ADEME reference benchmark).
2. Average Photo Size
Average 4 MB photo: 4 MB × 1.17 g = 4.68 g CO₂ per photo per year in the cloud.
3. Annual Average
1,825 photos/year: 1,825 × 4.68 g = 8.541 kg CO₂ per year per user.
4. Rail Equivalent
High-speed train: 2.93 g CO₂/km → 8.541 kg / 2.93 g = 2,915 km by train!
